ABOUT US

The St Louis Kali - Silat Martial Arts School

The St Louis Kali - Silat Martial Arts school was founded with the sole objective of sharing martial arts knowledge from several sources.  While students have a base curriculum and base techniques and drills they need to learn, the school remains flexible and is constantly exploring martial arts.  Students are encouraged to enhance their knowledge and find "bridges" between what they may know and the new techniques they will learn.

The school concentrates in a full  spectrum of martial arts, from the traditional to a unique blended system.  Traditional arts training is an excellent vehicle to learn clean technique, body discipline, basic attributes, and body mechanics.  Forms are taught for several reasons: concentration, focus, technique perfecting, and their hidden, seldom-taught practical application.  All forms taught at the St Louis Kali - Silat Martial Arts School are shown with applications and demonstrated against other arts.

We believe that all martial arts have something to offer.  Our curriculum emphasizes discipline, persistence, good effective technique, focus, attribute development, and self control.  The student is exposed to different arts like Kali, Silat, Jun Fan Gung Fu, Jeet Kune Do concepts, Muay Thai, and some grappling, and he/she is taught how to combine them.  This exposure provides the  foundation for a unique blended system which draws from different styles and completes the student's curriculum.  Self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-control are natural by-products of this type of training.  Children, young adults, and adults alike will greatly benefit from this program.

Self defense techniques and progressions are an integral part of our curriculum.  You may find us training on a Sunday working on a particular set of techniques geared to teach awareness and tactics.

Reality training is part of every class taught at the St Louis Kali-Silat Martial Arts school.  Reality means that there are not really bad techniques but only bad timing.  There are techniques that will best fit your natural abilities and age.  There are techniques that will work better in certain environments and situations.  All techniques have a dojo realm and a reality realm.  Advanced students are expected to learn this distinction and fully understand when, where, and how techniques are used.
